RI State Championship
Bill "Stew" Stewart » Monday April 25, 2005
The results for Pye Brook regulars are in from Saturday April 23 RI State Championships. RI States were actually held at West Thompson Lake in North Grosvenordale, CT. West Thompson is yet another course located on an Army Corps of Engineer dam/reservoir site. W. Thompson is a terrific course combining short wooded holes, long open holes and a bunch of challenging OB’s. Although damp, the rain held off in the first round until foursomes had a hole or two left. Not bad, considering the forecast. While golfers huddled during lunch to stay dry, by the beginning of the second round the rain was here to stay, and pouring pretty hard. Golfers went out, umbrellas in hand, in an attempt to play a round with dry discs. Most had their own rituals for hunkering under an umbrella on the ground, feverishly drying discs right up until it was their turn to throw. Even the most careful were dealing with saturated towels, hands and golf bags by the middle of the round. Most participants added a significant number of strokes to their first round scores. Ultimately, the winners were those disc golfers able to tune out the elements and focus on the task at hand.

- Great review with much accuracy, almost like you were there. But no, you were cuddled up under your blankie warm and dry and I still have tag #1. See you soon Roger, I am waiting for your full charge someday soon.
— MattS Tue Apr 26, 07:50 PM # - I forgot one thing. I got to play with Stewie the first round and he was incredible. Nothing like the ‘miss the 6 foot putt’ Stew that we all know and love. He was an animal with par after par after par (and a couple birdies). I had 7 birdies and when we added up the scores at the end, his consistency showed up on the card and I only had him by 2 shots. If I could have only taken a little of the advice I was giving Stew as we played I would have been way under par.
Congrats Stew on one outstanding round of tournament golf! (we wont talk about round 2)
— MattS Tue Apr 26, 07:54 PM # - I was indeed in the same conditions, although only on the softball field, not the dg course. I would like to mention that Stew wrote this review, so props to Stew on the round and the writing!
— Roger Tue Apr 26, 10:08 PM # - Hey Matt, thanks. I believe being grouped with you helped immensely—it was like having a coach out there. It’s one thing to talk about the “mental” aspect of this game, another to figure out how to control it. Matt and all good tourney players have a ritual that analyzes the situation, concentrates on the plan and focuses the execution.
Halfway through the round, I was trying not to get too jazzed about what was happening, but there was no doubt I had a lot of confidence, and I was able to contain it by concentrating and visualizing the execution of the putts.
The second round can only be learned from, and non-chalanting the exact six-footer to start round two derailed confidence, and ultimately other bad habits followed suit in addition to the challenging conditions.
It’s basically the ‘zone’ mentioned in most other sports, but in DG that zone is more mental than physical, and all the difference between a 56 and a 71.
Good luck at Barre Guys!
